Terracelimar - Pep Lladó

Album of the Week - August 9, 2015
Being part of a music distribution service, the question emerges will I find a track, or tracks, compatible with Jazzy Lounge's format. It is always a pleasant surprise went I hear an album that transcends ordinary and familiar content. Some might say, we broadcasters hear similar sounds through dozens of releases every year, but Pep Lladó, a music composer and producer originating from the locale of Catalonia, Spain, has reinvigorated the modern Catalonia sound. Pep Lladó's Terracelimar is a stimulating Catalonian rumba, flamenco, and jazz production, infusing the 15 tracks with a touch of electronica. The result is an earpleasing album aimed at chilling you at home, entertaining friends outdoors or indoors and even at your local spa or boutique. Produced and recorded at his personal recording studio and record label Sota La Palmera  (Under The Palm Tree), the production is a solo endeavor completed with a little help from guest musicians. With the tracks falling under music styles like lounge, house, downtempo and ambient, this release is sure to reach a broad field of listeners.

On this release, Pep takes five tracks from earlier releases and gives them a 2015 rework: "Doronto (Version 2015)"; "Boslamb (Version 2015)"; "Demaramar (Version 2015)"; "Doronto Brazil (Version 2015)"; "Febrer (Version 2015)".

Some of my favorite tracks from Terracelimar are as follows:
(Tracks listed below with an asterisk * to the left of the title were added to Jazzy Lounge's daily rotation.)

* "Delacasa" - Opens the album with traditional Spanish rhythm. Evokes an image of a couple dancing in traditional dress. Guest artist Johnny Salazar providing the catchy percussion patterns and interspersed with various guitar licks and rhythms by Victor del Rio and Sergi Cararrós.
* "Doronto (Version 2015)" - Soft, sweet acoustic guitar intro, soft pads/percussion and then an electronically manipulated flute follows and becomes complete around the 1:30 mark with keyboards and vibes joining in for a soothing lounge sound. Features Antonio Martinez  “Ñoño” on acoustic guitar.
* "Boslamb (Version 2015)" - This song begins with dreamy intro, moves into jazzy rhythm were the vibes carry the melody until it flows into a flavorful guitar solo by David Torras.
* "Calapedrosa" - Absolutely gorgeous. In my opinion, the prettiest track on the album. Draws so much emotion. Could and would fit well in any cinematic, family movie production. Beautiful keyboard melody, cute, childlike sample, unobtrusive but very amazing percussion by Johnny Salazar and soft violins are some of the prominent elements that complete this great song.

- "Aguamiluno" - Johnny Salazar produces percussive sounds that remind me of a train traveling down the tracks. This tracks moves and grooves.
- "Gamparilan" - I love the use of the acordeón in this track as it carries a vibrant, memorable melody from beginning to end.
- "Demaramar (Version 2015)" - opens with a driving, balearic house beat. Party time. Includes a jazzy keyboard solo.
- "Naraisurai" - opens with a strong jazz-house dance beat.
- "Madamlamalgam" - modern latin and flamenco rhythms mixed with jazzy flavors.
- "Balfebre" - intro reminds me of someone telling a personal story.

Terracelimar is quite an accomplishment for the very talented Pep Lladó. He presided over the full production of this release, painted the album cover, created the music videos and uniquely titled the album by combining three latin root words- terra, cel and mar- which translated is earth, sea and sky.

"Sound Of You (Deep Session by Riccicomoto)" - Gushi & Raffunk

Song of the Week - September 29, 2013

Gushi & Raffunk- a tale of two artists who came together with their love of music to make music. Gushi & Raffunk's story relies solely on their ability to craft goood songs- one being the "Sound Of You (Deep Session by Riccicomoto)". With a little assistance on a remix by Enrico Regini also known as Riccicomoto, they have created a chilled, dreamy house track that has topped the Jazzy Lounge Top 25 charts for a total of eight weeks since April, 2013.

Initially appearing on Gushi & Raffunk's Sound Of You - The Remixes EP, it was included on the compilation Deep House Dreams 6. To match the mood of the compilation, the kick beats are soft which helps give it an ambient chill effect.

Riccicomoto uses many production elements to create a very dreamy house track- echo, reverb, phasing, plus vocal sampling, synths and string ensemble. The remix is 8:27 minutes long and he uses a one note string ensemble to "train" the ear to follow it through the length of the track while Gushi's soft and mellow vocals dart in and out of the song effectively.

This remix would work great for opening a house set in an Ibiza related atmosphere.

A mainstay on Jazzy Lounge, it first entered the playlist on March 9, 2013. As of this writing, that's nearly seven months of daily airplay.

Big "ups" to Gushi & Raffunk!

"The Race" - Malika Madremana

Song of the Month - July, 2013
A strong characteristic of reggae and house music are the positive messages many of the songs exhibit- words that encourage, motivate and uplift. Even more frequent in reggae music than house are the socially conscious lyrics that remove the cataracts from events we've shielded ourselves from. Such is the song "The Race" by Malika Madremana. It's an eye, ear and mind opener. Exceptionally crafted lyrics using double entendre throughout much of the song, she juxtaposes humankind (the race of man) against the events in a race or sports activity. A very thought provoking song that invites you to listen to every word as you begin to visualize every major point she expresses. Nothing feels forced. The lyrics and melody flow well together.

The opening of "The Race" shares the true reason why man was created and then quickly focuses on the fallen or sinful nature of man using parts of the day as a measure on how evil and greed can progress. Segments of the lyrics provided below.

1st stanza
"From the dawn of the morn Man was born to live in love
Cooperate and create and to Jah be thankful of...."
"But by noon we were doomed.....some just could not get enough
Unjustified evil pride divided and tied us up...."
2nd stanza
"As the day turned to night man grew colder than he was
Filled up with hate and impatience he forced himself to run...."
3rd stanza
Well the earth was made by God for everyone to share
But the way man carries on it seems he just don't care...."

It's the chorus, though, that bridges this song together.

"Red flag, whistle or something
Referee ain't saying nothing
How can we catch up with something so far?
We're trying so hard
 I'm crying false start
Stop and restart the race
Hearts can reset the pace
Don't you know haste makes waste
Trip and end up flat on your face
You're disgraced
Cheaters never take first place"

To get the full effect, you must hear the entire song. It's the strongest song on the album in my opinion. "The Race" has also had a great impact on the Jazzy Lounge listeners. The track landed in Jazzy Lounge's Top 10 four consecutive weeks reaching a peak at number 4 two weeks ago. It's definitely in the running for Jazzy Lounge's song of the year for 2013.

"Tijuana Cuervo Gold Mix" - Nyree and The Auto Charm

Song of the Week - December 16, 2012
If you haven't heard this great summertime feel of a track, you are missing a real treat. House heads should be partial to Nyree and The Auto Charm - "Tijuana (Cuervo Gold Mix)" - because of it's soulful groove. This track has beach party written all over it. It is a remix of the original pop-infused track "Tijuana" by Nyree and The Auto Charm. Having been in Jazzy Lounge's playlist since June 8, 2012, it has past the six month point. Most tracks last three months in the playlist and they're gone. But it has proven to be a fan favorite as tracks remain in the playlist based on the number of votes it receives.

A Beautifully Complicated Life - Chinua Hawk

Album of the Week - October 21, 2012
Blue Canoe Records located in White, Georgia (north of Atlanta) is known for its impressive roster of jazz musicians and featured studio guests. But little did anyone know before March, 2012, they were promoting an artist from an unrelated genre from their solid jazz label. A vocal powerhouse and a talented lyricist, the soulful R&B, Soul and Adult Contemporary artist Chinua Hawk is not a newcomer to the music scene. Very active since 2005, he's released three previous full length albums; has worked with major recording artists; and won music/artist awards (APCA Best Male Performer 2009). Produced by Blue Canoe recording artist and bassist Joseph Patrick Moore, 12 carefully selected tracks of covers and originals were chosen to showcase Chinua's amazing tenor vocals in his latest release, "A Beautifully Complicated Life".

Let's look at the title of his album "A Beautifully Complicated Life" for a moment. His title serves as the theme behind a few of the original tracks written for this album. Does anyone welcome complications in life? The overwhelming response to that question is no! Complications require moving out of our comfort zone to resolve an issue. But, it must be done so we can move forward. In "A Beautifully Complicated Life", Chinua poetically and lyrically paints pictures of events experienced by many people, but provides either positive outlooks or resolutions.

Eight original tracks on this album were written by Chinua in collaboration with other lyricists. And a fine job they did. Of the originals, my favorite is "You're All I've Got". Beginning with the excitement of entertaining an audience, Chinua faces the humbling realization after the lights dim and the venue is empty, that there's only one true reality for him. He gets to the meat of the message by telling his one and only "You're all I've got. You're all I need. And there is nothing else but your love unconditionally." That refrain/chorus alone could melt the heart of any woman. There is powerful emotion in that phrase. Singing it without “shouting it” is the key point here. He is smooth as silk. It's as if she was in front of him, their eyes locked. Holding her hands, his vocals transfer the passion of his energy- his emotion; his love; his life- to her.

The brief instrumental intro to "On My Way" reminds me of the inimitable Buddy Miles. The song then begins a funky groove with Chinua's smooth chops of telling the tale of continued hope and perseverance. "I've packed my songs and took off for my destination. I had to let it go." After focusing on the labors and frustrations of being an entertainer, he's determined to let the past go and keep moving forward.

A few of my other favorites are the following. The soulful "After the Rain" speaks on deception, heartbreak and forgiveness. "Sunflower" is an R&B song that extols the virtue of a beautiful relationship. "One Man World", an adult contemporary track, speaks on the dangers of depression and isolation.

It's easy to be critical of a cover tune, especially when it is a cover of a song you love. Of the four covers, the most effective arrangements were of "Careless Whisper" and "Let's Stay Together". They never strayed too far from the originals yet provided satisfying reworks of old favorites.

You embrace Chinua's vocals but you feel the background music and arrangements. The studio musicians never get in the way of this fine production. They offer solid support on every track creating compelling intros (the chromatic chord strumming of Chris Blackwell and the melodic keys and soft chords of John Carroza in "You're All in Need"). And I give a tip of the hat to Joseph Patrick Moore and John Carroza who mixed and engineered a balanced production.

An overall solid release, this album should bring additional and much needed attention to a talented, creative lyricist and smooth tenor, Chinua Hawk.
